Bilton news – May 10
Cruel weather: with the best bank holiday forecast for years the organisers of Bilton Gala must have been devastated when it became obvious the Gala would have to be postponed. But it was the right decision. Anyone who walks over open ground or has a garden will know that the land is still saturated. The Richard Taylor School Playing Field would have suffered massive damage from the thousands of feet treading over it and the movement of heavy vehicles and machines needed to deliver a successful 21st century gala. This could not have been allowed to happen. The Gala committee is working hard to find an alternative date which i expected to be Sunday 22nd July..
Coffee morning: at St John’s Church Hall on Saturday, May 12, 10am-noon. Entrance £1 includes a drink and biscuit. There will be a raffle, tombola, book, card and cake stalls. All monies raised will go to sponsoring a girl’s six year high school education at Bunda Girls’ Secondary School in Tanzania. This is a rare science school for girls in a very remote part of the country. There will be an information stand at the coffee morning.
Thanks for support: the organisers of the coffee morning at St John’s last month would like to thank everyone who supported it and helped raise £570 for Water Aid.
Local History Day: on Saturday, May 12. Bilton Historical Society will be at Harrogate Library, Victoria Avenue with a display. At 2.30pm Peter Barnes is giving a talk on the Harrogate Gas Works Railway. There will be a scale model of the Barber siding on display.
Services at St John’s: on Sunday, May 13 Holy Communion is at 8am and 10am. There will be a parade service at St Luke’s at 10.30am. Between May 10-20, Ascension and Pentecost, is a global prayer event “Thy Kingdom Come”. As a result the prayer routine is a little different to normal next week, it starts on Sunday, May 13 at 6pm with Prayer Walking of the parish. Next week morning prayer is on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9-9.30am. On Tuesday, 9-9.30am it takes place at St Luke’s. On Wednesday, May 16 Holy Communion is at 10.30am.

Bingo: at Bilton Community Centre, 48 Bilton Lane, on Monday, May 14, 2pm. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun. Admission 30p, bingo books 50p each.
Knox WI: on Monday, May 14 at Dene Park Community Centre, 7.30pm Mr J Coates of North Yorkshire Waste Council Services is to give a talk on The North Yorkshire Rotters. Visitors welcome. There is a small charge.

Bilton WI: “Speak with I.T.” is the title of the presentation by Pip Garside at the meeting on Wednesday, May 16 at Bilton Community Centre, 7.30pm. New members and visitors welcome.
Harrogate Stitch and Craft Group: on Thursday, May 17 Teresa Marshall is to give a talk on the Bilton Hogspital at Bilton Community Centre, 7.30pm.
Relief Road Petition: for some time there has been a petition against the relief road on http://www.niddgorgeca.org and this is still open. People without access to the internet have expressed concern that they are unable to sign this. In response the organisers, Nidd Gorge Community Action, have arranged for paper copies to be available in local businesses. These include Woodfield Community Store on Woodfield, Road, Kendall’s Farm Butchers on Skipton Road, Korner Kabin Newsagents on King Edwards Drive, The Tanning Centre on the corner of King Edwards Drive and Bilton Lane and Natham Grassam Barber on Church Avenue. There are more, including most independent businesses on the King Edwards Drive parade. More names will appear next week.
